About this position

PhD studentship in nanoelectronics at Liverpool John Moores University (School of Engineering and Built Environment), in collaboration with IMEC, Belgium.

The project is titled Characterisation of nanoscale semiconductor devices of technology nodes beyond 2 nm for emerging memory and computing applications. It focuses on the characterisation and modelling of nanoscale semiconductor devices for energy-efficient and high-performance computing, including conventional MOSFETs, emerging memristive memory devices, 2D atomic resistive-switching memristors, and 2D-channel FETs. The work is strongly relevant to electronic engineering, solid state physics, nanotechnology, and AI/neuromorphic computing applications.

This is a fully funded three-year PhD scholarship funded by the EPSRC UK. Funding includes a waiver of annual tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum, and a contribution of £1,600 per annum towards research running costs.

Eligibility is open to UK and non-UK citizens. Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain before September 2027, a good Master’s degree and/or a good first-class or upper second class Honours undergraduate degree. The project seeks candidates with a strong research background and track record in electrical and electronic engineering, physics, or material engineering, with consideration of academic qualifications, publications, and other research achievements.

The location is LJMU (Liverpool, UK) with research activity also at IMEC (Leuven, Belgium). The studentship must be filled by the September 2027 fixed enrolment point.

To apply, contact Prof. Weidong Zhang or Dr. Nishant Saxena by email and send your CV, transcripts, personal statement, and cover letter. You must also state your nationality, residence status, degree classification, contact details, and willingness to accept the offer if approved. Deadline: 22 January 2027.
