About this position
Ghent University is recruiting a PhD candidate in coastal engineering, river hydrodynamics, estuarine hydrodynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and nature-based solutions for riverbank protection and habitat restoration.
The position is part of the four-year RECRAFT project, which aims to develop innovative wave-attenuating structures, engineered riverbank profiles, reused dredged sediments, and vegetation-based protection to reduce hydrodynamic forces while supporting ecosystem recovery in estuaries and intertidal habitats.
You will join the Coastal Engineering Research Group at Ghent University and work with academic and industry partners including DEME, Jan De Nul, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Mantis Consulting, the University of Antwerp, and Flanders Hydraulics. The research combines numerical modelling, wave-flume experiments, and field measurements to design, test, and validate scalable riverbank protection concepts.
Key tasks include developing CFD models, optimizing protection concepts, designing and conducting wave-flume experiments, supporting field campaigns, analyzing waves, currents, and water levels, and contributing to reports, publications, conferences, and project meetings. There may also be opportunities to assist with teaching and supervision of master’s students.
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree or equivalent in civil, coastal, hydraulic or ocean engineering, physical oceanography, or a related field; alternatively, mechanical or environmental engineering with relevant specialization in environmental fluid mechanics and hydraulics. Strong English skills, programming/data analysis experience (MATLAB, Python), and interest in laboratory and field work are important. Experience with OpenFOAM, wave flumes, and nature-based solutions is an advantage.
The contract is for up to 4 years (initial one-year appointment, extendable to 48 months subject to positive evaluation). The work location is Technologiepark, Zwijnaarde, Belgium. The application deadline is 6 November 2026.
