About this position
PhD position in Computational Neuroscience at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), Institute of Computational Neuroscience (ICNS Hamburg).
The project focuses on game theory, network neuroscience, computational analysis and modelling, and clinical stroke research. The doctoral work aims to understand how brain lesions reveal causal contributions of brain regions and their interactions to behaviour, and how these insights may help predict recovery after stroke and identify rehabilitation targets.
The position is embedded in an international research programme with collaborators in Ghent, Paris, and Amiens, and sits at the interface of computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, experimental brain perturbation, and open science. The successful candidate will work with Prof. Claus C. Hilgetag and contribute to methods development, lesion inference, higher-order network interactions, and reproducible Python-based analysis tools.
Funding and conditions: 65% part-time, temporary for three years, funded by third-party funding. The post provides the opportunity to obtain a PhD. Compensation follows TVöD/VKA; the ad lists a full-time equivalent salary range of €63,600–€91,100 depending on qualifications and experience.
Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant quantitative field such as computational neuroscience, systems neuroscience, psychology, medicine, computer science, physics, mathematics, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline. Strong analytical and computational skills, especially Python, are required, along with independent scientific thinking, motivation for clinically meaningful quantitative research, and fluent English. Prior related experience is advantageous.
Application materials: CV with two academic referees, degree certificates and transcripts, a concise motivation letter, links/copies of publications, preprints, software repositories or conference contributions, and a brief one-page description of a project where you played a substantial independent role.
Deadline: 2026-10-26.
