About this position
This PhD position at Forschungszentrum Jülich offers an exciting opportunity to investigate healthy brain function through the lens of synaptic dynamics. The project centers on building a multi-scale model that links molecular renewal processes to the functional properties of synapses, aiming to elucidate the relationship between synaptic resilience and the reliability of synaptic responses. The research will span spatial scales from the molecular to the network level and temporal scales from seconds to hours and beyond.
The successful candidate will engage in mathematical modeling and numerical simulation, complemented by the analysis of experimental datasets for model validation. The work is situated at the interface between neuroscience and digital technologies, leveraging world-class scientific and technical infrastructure. The position is embedded in a highly motivated, international, and interdisciplinary team, with continuous expert guidance from academic supervisors and opportunities for networking through participation in conferences and project meetings.
Applicants should possess a Master's degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, computational neuroscience, or a related field. Essential qualifications include solid knowledge in mathematics (linear algebra, differential equations, integral calculus, probability theory, numerics) and proficiency in Python programming. Additional expertise in C++, GPU programming, parallel programming, or high-performance computing is highly valued. Experience with modeling, analysis of complex dynamical systems, simulation, machine learning methods, and software development is beneficial. Candidates must demonstrate good organizational skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and effective communication skills. Working proficiency in English is required (TOEFL or equivalent or exemption), and knowledge of German is beneficial.
The position is limited to three years and offers fair remuneration according to pay group 13 (65%) of the TVöD-Bund, with a special payment ('Christmas bonus') amounting to 60% of one month's salary. Additional benefits include 30 days of vacation, professional development and training opportunities, and support for international employees. The research campus provides an ideal environment for collegial exchange and sporting activities, with a cafeteria offering a relaxing lunch break with a lake view.
