About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Dynamics & Control section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The project is titled “PhD Diagnostics for interconnected complex dynamical systems” and focuses on systems and control theory, interconnected dynamical systems, fault detection and isolation, observer design, machine learning, and optimization. The research is motivated by the reliable operation of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, with a strong industrial context and collaboration with ASML and other partners in the Brainport region.

The PhD candidate will develop innovative monitoring and hierarchical diagnostic algorithms for complex dynamical systems, aiming to automate fault isolation with diagnostic performance guarantees. The project sits within a broader TU/e initiative on holistic design automation for semiconductor manufacturing equipment and offers interaction with a vibrant research community in dynamical systems and control.

Supervisors: Prof. Nathan van de Wouw, Prof. Tom Oomen, and Dr. Michelle Chong.

Eligibility: Applicants should have a master’s degree or equivalent in systems and control, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or applied mathematics. A strong background in mathematical systems and control theory is required, along with interest in hybrid dynamical systems, learning techniques, and programming (Matlab or Python). Fluent English is expected.

Funding and conditions: This is a full-time PhD employment for four years, with salary in scale P (€3,059–€3,881 per month), plus year-end bonus and vacation pay. TU/e also provides training, campus facilities, and allowances for commuting, working from home, and internet costs.

Deadline: 17 July 2026. Applications are reviewed as soon as possible and the vacancy remains open until filled.

How to apply: Submit a complete online application through the TU/e vacancy portal. Prepare a single PDF containing your CV, publication list, three references, motivation letter, diplomas/transcripts, and a short description of your MSc thesis and/or relevant research projects.
