About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of St Andrews in antibiotic tolerance, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and pharmacy.
This EASTBIO-funded doctoral project is titled Efficacy and Mechanisms of Novel Treatments for Antibiotic-Tolerant Infections and is hosted in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews. The project is supervised by Dr Jo Hobbs and Prof Mat Upton, with collaboration from Amprologix Ltd. The research focuses on Staphylococcus aureus and the challenge of antibiotic tolerance, where bacteria survive lethal antibiotic exposure without being resistant.
The student will evaluate novel antibiotics and antimicrobial peptides, including Amprologix candidates, against tolerant bacteria using in vitro and in vivo insect infection models. The project also explores mechanism-specific strategies such as stringent response inhibitors and metabolic adjuvants, and will investigate mechanisms of action using molecular, biochemical, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic approaches.
This is a 4-year PhD studentship and is open to UK and international students. Funding covers a UKRI-standard stipend and UK-level tuition fees, with the university covering the Home-International fee difference. The student will be based mainly at St Andrews and also complete a placement at Amprologix in Plymouth.
Applicants should submit the EASTBIO application materials, complete the required survey, and apply through the University of St Andrews online portal. Two references are required, and English language evidence should be included if applicable. Enquiries about the project can be sent to [email protected]; application queries go to [email protected].
