About this position
PhD project at the University of Southampton on efficient optimization algorithms for large-scale interdiction problems on networks.
This research focuses on how to protect vital transport, logistics, and communication networks against disruption. The project studies network interdiction, especially shortest-path interdiction, and may later extend to maximum-flow interdiction or uncertainty in disruption effects. You will work on mathematically sound algorithms, adaptive decomposition, sparse numerical methods, and continuous relaxations such as value-function and semismooth approaches.
Training and research activities will combine mathematical theory with computational experiments. The work involves implementing and testing algorithms on synthetic and public networks, comparing runtime, memory use, and solution quality against established optimization methods. The intended outcome is new algorithmic insights, research software, and a prototype tool for network vulnerability assessment.
The project is hosted in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, and is supervised by Dr Stefano Cipolla and Prof Alain B. Zemkoho. It is relevant to students interested in operational research, optimization, graph algorithms, and numerical linear algebra.
Funding: Competition funded.
Entry requirement: a 2:1 honours degree.
Deadline: 18 December 2026.
