About this position
This PhD project at The Open University focuses on advancing the energy transition in emerging and new frontier countries through complementary innovations in off-grid systems, multi-purpose energy hubs, battery repurposing, and enabling institutional reforms. The research addresses the urgent need for improved access to affordable and sustainable electricity in regions most affected by climate change and limited grid infrastructure. Despite numerous reforms over the past two decades, many countries still face challenges related to efficiency, universality of access, affordability, service quality, and regulatory gaps.
The project offers two main research foci: (A) a comparative review of electricity sector reforms and the rise of off-grid power technologies as alternatives to traditional central grids, and (B) the development of strategies for integrating electric mobility and energy provision, including the participatory design of energy hubs and the repurposing of large lithium-ion batteries for stationary energy storage. Both approaches emphasize the importance of institutional theory, strategic management, innovation, and the dynamics of formal and informal institutions in shaping outcomes. The project encourages the use of mixed methods, including action research, and welcomes creative merging of the two foci for a holistic approach. Supervision is provided by Dr Charles Mbalyohere, Professor Devendra Kodwani, and Professor Claudia Eckert, with expertise spanning strategy, finance, and engineering.
The position is available for both campus-based and distance learning modes. Applicants should have a strong background in a relevant discipline and a keen interest in energy transitions, innovation, and institutional analysis.
The deadline for applications is January 7, 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the project link provided.
