About this position

PhD opportunity at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, United Kingdom: Manipulating meiotic crossover control in wheat. This project sits at the intersection of genetics, genomics, plant cell biology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, and quantitative genetics, with a strong applied focus on improving wheat breeding.

The research asks whether meiotic crossover patterns in wheat can be deliberately altered to increase recombination in regions of the genome that are normally difficult to breed with. You will investigate TILLING mutant alleles of meiotic genes, use super-resolution microscopy and genomics, explore natural allelic variation in the JIC Watkins wheat landrace collection, and develop a high-throughput pollen-typing assay. The project also includes a genome-wide association study to identify loci that may unlock recombination in low-recombination regions.

You will be based in the Morgan group and co-supervised by Dr Simon Griffiths. Training will span meiotic cytology, molecular genetics, population genomics, and statistical analysis. The project is well suited to students with a background in genetics, plant sciences, or a related bioscience discipline who want to connect fundamental biology with crop improvement and climate resilience.

Funding is through the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership and is fully funded for 4 years. It includes tuition fees, a living stipend (£21,805 for 2026/27), and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year. The programme also includes a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS).

Eligibility includes at least a UK-equivalent Bachelor’s (Honours) 2:1 and an English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category. The project is shortlisted for funding, and shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027. Start date is 1 October 2027.
