About this position

La Trobe University, in partnership with CSIRO and Bush Heritage Australia, is offering an exciting PhD opportunity for domestic students interested in environmental genomics, conservation, and climate adaptation. The project focuses on the genomic assessment of early signatures of adaptation in juvenile Eucalyptus microcarpa and Eucalyptus melliodora trees from a large-scale provenance trial at Nardoo Hills. The research aims to identify genetic variation linked to resilience and fitness, providing insights into the mechanisms that enable these iconic Australian species to adapt to climate challenges. The findings will inform conservation strategies and accelerate ecosystem restoration across Australian landscapes.

The successful candidate will be admitted to La Trobe University's PhD program and supervised by Dr Susan Hoebee (La Trobe University), Dr Rebecca Jordan (CSIRO), and Dr Rowan Mott (Bush Heritage Australia). The position includes a four-year scholarship of $48,000 per annum, a project expense package of $13,000 per annum, a three-month internship with Bush Heritage Australia, and structured professional development. Applicants must be Australian/New Zealand citizens or Permanent Residents, hold a first class Honours or Masters degree with a substantial research thesis, and demonstrate competency in DNA/bioinformatics, communication, and analytical skills. Willingness to travel for fieldwork, meet OH&S requirements, and obtain a Working with Children Check and Australian drivers licence are essential.

Coding experience and a passion for Australian flora are desirable. Applications are open until filled. Interested candidates should contact Dr Susan Hoebee at [email protected] and review the project details online.
