About this position
ETH Zurich is advertising one or two Doctoral Positions in Exoplanet Atmosphere Characterisation and the Search for Life within the Exoplanets and Habitability Group led by Prof. Sascha P. Quanz. The project is closely connected to the ETH-led LIFE space mission, a future mid-infrared nulling interferometer designed to directly detect and spectroscopically characterise temperate terrestrial exoplanets around nearby stars.
The successful doctoral students will join the LIFE Science Team and work at the intersection of astronomy, physics, planetary science, atmospheric science, and potentially computer science/AI. Research topics include atmospheric characterisation of temperate terrestrial exoplanets, modelling of non-Earth-like atmospheres and biospheres, exploration of alternative biosignatures, and investigation of abiotic scenarios that could mimic signs of life. Another possible direction is the use of machine learning and AI for atmospheric inference and interpretation, including comparisons with conventional retrieval methods.
The position involves developing and applying atmospheric retrieval and complementary modelling/inference approaches, assessing robustness and limitations of different methods, and translating scientific results into science and instrument-performance requirements for LIFE. The student will collaborate closely with the LIFE Science Team, the LIFE Instrument Science Team, and the broader international LIFE collaboration.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a master's degree or equivalent in astrophysics, planetary science, atmospheric science, physics, or a closely related field by the start date. Strong scientific programming skills, preferably in Python, are expected; experience with atmospheric modelling, retrievals, radiative transfer, photochemical or climate modelling, statistical inference, or ML/AI is welcome. A strong interest in exoplanet habitability, biosignatures, and the search for life is essential, along with good teamwork and very good English.
Funding: this is a fully funded four-year doctoral position with competitive salary and benefits according to ETH regulations, plus support for conference travel, computing, and career development.
Application: submit your application online via the ETH Zurich portal only. Required documents are a CV, transcripts and diploma if available, a statement of research interests (max. 2 pages), and contact details for three referees. The deadline is 25 November 2026. The start date is flexible, with a planned start in spring / early summer 2027.
