About this position
Ulster University is advertising a funded PhD opportunity in Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism within the Life and Health Sciences area. The project is titled “Strengthening Northern Ireland Through Falls Prevention: Using Population Data Science and Co-Design to Improve Health Outcomes and Support Healthy Ageing.”
This PhD sits at the intersection of public health, sports science, population data science, health outcomes research, and implementation science. The project addresses falls prevention and healthy ageing in Northern Ireland, using a mixed-methods approach that combines public health datasets with qualitative interviews. The research will identify who is most at risk of falls, examine participation in muscle-strengthening physical activity among adults aged 65+, and then co-design and test a pilot strength-based intervention with members of the public, health professionals, community organisations, and policymakers.
The project is funded by the Department for the Economy (DfE) and the Vice Chancellor’s Research Scholarship (VCRS). Funding covers tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of approximately £22,000 per year for three years, and a Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) of approximately £900 per year. Part-time funding may be available at a pro rata rate.
Eligibility is open to applicants worldwide, regardless of residency or domicile. Applicants should normally hold, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree in a relevant subject. The university may also consider a Lower Second Class Honours degree plus a Master’s degree with Distinction, or equivalent professional experience. A strong research proposal, personal statement, and relevant research-methods experience are expected; desirable criteria include a First Class degree, a relevant Master’s degree, work experience, and peer-reviewed publications.
The submission deadline is 8 January 2027 at 4:00 PM. Interview date is listed as February 2027, and the preferred start date is 13 September 2027. Applications should be submitted online via Ulster University’s doctoral college application process.
