About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in the School of Earth & Environment on reducing uncertainty in the effect of shipping on climate change.

This project sits at the intersection of climate science, environmental science, Earth science, physics, data science, machine learning, and mathematical modelling. The research focuses on aerosol particles from shipping, their effects on clouds, and how these processes influence Earth’s energy balance and climate uncertainty. The student will use data science/ML, modelling, and observations to investigate shipping aerosol climate effects, including perturbed parameter ensemble approaches, satellite and field campaign data, and potentially real ship emissions data.

The project aims to constrain model uncertainty, improve aerosol-cloud process relationships, and better understand the climate impact of shipping regulations and recent warming. It also contributes to broader understanding of aerosol-cloud interactions and climate projections.

Funding: Competition-funded PhD project within the UNRISK CDT. The award includes full university tuition fees, a stipend at standard UKRI rates, £6000 for individual research and training costs, £5000 cohort-level training, and access to a Flexible Fund. International applicants are welcome, but awards are limited by UKRI rules and they must cover visa and health surcharge costs.

Eligibility: Applicants with backgrounds in physics, maths, or computer/data science and coding skills are especially encouraged.

Supervisors: Dr Daniel Grosvenor, Professor Ken Carslaw FRS, and Dr Leighton Regayre at the University of Leeds.

Deadline: 13 January 2027.
