A fully funded PhD position is open in Basel for a project on Forecasting Resistance Spread & Epidemiological Impact. The research sits at the interface of spatial statistics, disease modelling, and computational biology, with a strong focus on malaria.

The project addresses an urgent global health problem: malaria deaths have fallen thanks to insecticide-treated nets, but rising insecticide resistance threatens these gains. The PhD will develop mechanistic, spatially explicit models using real-world data and integrate them with a malaria epidemiology simulation platform to forecast resistance spread and quantify its epidemiological impact.

The student will work in a collaborative environment with researchers at Swiss TPH and external academic partners including Prof Ben Lambert (University of Oxford), Prof Seth Flaxman (University of Oxford), Prof Tom Churcher (Imperial College London), and Dr Elizaveta Semenova (Imperial College London).

Ideal applicants should have a strong quantitative background and interest in Bayesian data analysis, mathematical modelling, evolutionary biology, and quantitative genetics. Curiosity and independence are highlighted as important qualities.
