About this position

Join the WIFORCE Research School at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) for a fully funded PhD position at the intersection of forest genetics, tree breeding, and advanced forest operations. This interdisciplinary project is a collaboration between the research groups of Professor Ola Lindroos (Department of Forest Economics and Technology) and Dr. Kelly Swarts (Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology/UPSC). The project aims to integrate genetic data with operational and environmental information to better understand how trees grow and adapt, contributing to sustainable forestry and climate change mitigation.

As a PhD student, you will transform commercial forests in Sweden into large-scale progeny trials by linking DNA from individual trees with operational and phenotypic data collected during conventional harvesting. Your research will involve hands-on field sampling, high-throughput genotyping, and data fusion using machine-generated harvest data, annotated images, and environmental information. You will evaluate methods to reconstruct pedigree relationships and quantify the benefits of improved breeding material in mixed stands. The project leverages expertise in forestry, genomics, bioinformatics, AI, and data management, providing you with practical experience in both laboratory and computational analysis.

The Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology, formally established in 2026, is dedicated to high-quality research and education, collaborating with industry and society to develop a bio-based economy. The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology is part of the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), a world-leading centre for experimental plant research and forest biotechnology. The WIFORCE Research School, part of the Wallenberg Initiatives in Forest Research, addresses key social issues such as biodiversity and the role of forests in climate change, developing new analytical tools for sustainable forest management.

Applicants should have an MSc in bioinformatics, genetics, biology, forestry, computer science, or a closely related field, with a strong interest in integrating genetics, data management, and biological process management. Experience in data management and/or genetic laboratory work is required, as well as the ability to conduct independent field work. Fluency in English is essential. Meritorious qualifications include field work experience, a valid Swedish driving licence or equivalent, and academic publishing experience. Selection is based on your written application, CV, degree project, degree certificates and transcripts, two personal references, and English proficiency. Non-Swedish citizens must submit a copy of their passport’s information page.

The position is based in Umeå, Sweden, and offers employment for four years at 100% scope, with a standard PhD salary and benefits at SLU.
