About this position
The University of Edinburgh is offering a PhD opportunity supervised by Professor Lindsay Beevers and Encarni Medina Lopez on future hydrological extremes in a changing climate.
The project will quantify how floods and droughts may change under future climate change using the Reference Observatory of Basins for International hydrological climate change detection (ROBIN), a global network of near-natural catchments, together with global multi-model climate projections such as ISIMIP. It will investigate changes in the frequency, magnitude, duration and timing of hydrological extremes.
A major research focus is the use of physically coherent climate storylines alongside probabilistic ensemble projections. The PhD will examine how antecedent meteorological and geophysical conditions influence the severity and sequencing of future floods and droughts, and how these relationships vary across catchments, climate regions and hydrological regimes.
The work may also address compound and cascading climate risks, including interactions between hydrological extremes and wildfire risk. Applicants should apply through the E5 Doctoral Training Partnership project page.
