About this position
PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Electrical Engineering, within the Photonic Integration group, on dynamic metasurfaces for spacetime-engineered light. The project is part of the SPARK Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network and focuses on photonics, optics, applied physics, and electrical engineering.
The research aims to develop metasurfaces for synthetic crystal rotation and nonreciprocal light-matter interactions through ultrafast spatiotemporal modulation. The work includes theoretical modelling and simulation of anisotropic metasurfaces with epsilon-near-zero-like behaviour, realization of dynamically modulated metasurface structures, and experimental evaluation of ultrafast optical response. The candidate will also explore spatiotemporal light fields and nonreciprocal photonic phenomena.
The PhD student will be based at TU/e in Eindhoven and will be co-supervised by Prof. I. Liberal at the University of Navarra (UPNA), Spain. The project includes secondments: a 6-month stay at UPNA for theoretical modelling and a 3-month stay at UltraFast Innovations GmbH (UFI), Germany for ultrafast optical characterization.
Eligibility and requirements include a master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optics, Applied Physics, Materials Engineering, or a related field; a research-oriented attitude; ability to work in an interdisciplinary team; interest in collaboration with industrial partners; motivation to develop teaching skills and coach students; and fluent spoken and written English at C1 level. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule for the Netherlands.
Funding and employment: full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is in scale P, with a gross base salary of €3,204–€4,051 per month (full-time), plus an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus. The position is EU-funded through the SPARK / MSCA programme and includes standard TU/e employment benefits, pension, leave, training, and international support.
How to apply: submit your application online via the vacancy page. Include a cover letter, CV with research experience and publications, contact details for three references, and any other relevant information. The vacancy remains open until filled, but complete applications are prioritized.
