About this position
Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is offering a funded PhD position in the Quantum Materials Group within the Materials Research and Technology department in Belval, Luxembourg.
The project focuses on Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and entanglement with colour centres in silicon carbide, with a strong emphasis on quantum optics, quantum photonics, and scalable quantum communication hardware. The successful candidate will work on setting up a new optical cryostat platform combining confocal microscopy and interferometry, then move on to experiments on quantum photonic silicon carbide chips with fibre-coupled waveguides and integrated colour centres.
Research activities include identifying optimal pulsed excitation schemes for colour centres, applying spectral, temporal, and polarization filtering, characterising photon quality under different experimental conditions, and carrying out initial two-photon interference experiments before a fully on-chip cryostat demonstration. If time permits, the work may extend to entanglement generation between colour-centre chips in separate cryostats.
The PhD is supervised at LIST by Dr. Florian Kaiser. PhD enrolment is at the University of Luxembourg in Belval. The position is a temporary full-time contract of 14+22(+12) months, with a gross monthly salary of €3,435.81 paid over 13 months. Please note that university enrolment fees of 400 EUR per semester are to be covered by the successful applicant, and the master’s diploma must be recognised in Luxembourg.
Applicants should hold an MSc in physics or quantum technology and have demonstrated quantum optics experience, preferably from a BSc/MSc thesis project. Strong English skills are required, including a B2 certificate unless the master’s degree was taught entirely in English. The application must be submitted online and include a motivation letter, scientific CV, publications list, and two references. Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled.
