About this position

Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is offering a PhD position in advanced correlative microscopy and isotopic imaging for next-generation Li-ion batteries. The project is based in Belvaux, Luxembourg, with PhD enrolment at the University of Luxembourg in Belval.

The doctoral research will investigate lithium transport and interfacial processes in silicon-based Li-ion battery electrodes. The work focuses on developing advanced correlative microscopy and isotopic imaging methodologies, including high-throughput FIB-SIMS workflows, cryogenic sample preparation and analysis, protective capping and lift-out strategies, and automated high-resolution isotopic mapping. A key scientific aim is to generate statistically representative 2D and 3D maps of lithium isotopes and SEI-related species to quantify lithium distribution and nanoscale transport.

The project sits at the intersection of battery science, nano-analytics, instrumentation, software development, and data science. The successful candidate will work with experienced scientists, engineers, and international partners, contributing to experimental design, method development, data interpretation, scientific publishing, and conference presentations. The role offers substantial exposure to cutting-edge characterization tools, electrochemical materials characterization, isotopic tracing, and automated data analysis workflows.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a closely related field; fluency in English; and a B2 English certificate unless the degree was fully taught in English. Basic Python programming is considered an asset, along with an interest in advanced and prototype scientific instruments and automated acquisition/data-processing. The applicant’s master diploma must be recognized in Luxembourg.

The position is a fixed-term full-time contract for up to 48 months, starting 1 April 2027. The salary is €3,521.71 gross per month, paid over 13 months. Please note that university enrolment fees of €400 per semester are the responsibility of the successful candidate.

Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled. Applicants must apply online and submit a motivation letter, scientific CV, and two references. Email applications are not accepted.
