About this position

Argonne National Laboratory is recruiting for a postdoctoral appointee in experimental physics and superconducting device development for quantum information science. The project centers on advancing multipixel single-photon camera technology and multiplexed readout systems for quantum networking, communications, and computing.

The successful candidate will work on the design, fabrication, and characterization of superconducting devices based on high kinetic inductance materials. Research topics include microwave resonators for frequency-domain multiplexed readout, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs), cryogenic switches such as hTron and fTron, and integrated instrumentation for solid-state single-photon emitter characterization.

The role is embedded in a multidisciplinary team across Argonne’s High Energy Physics (HEP), X-ray Science (XSD), and Materials Science (MSD) divisions, with access to dilution refrigerators, adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators, low-noise DC/RF measurement systems, and advanced cleanroom fabrication facilities at the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM).

Eligibility highlights: recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (0–5 years) in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related field; experience with superconducting devices or low-temperature quantum technologies; and strong cryogenic measurement skills. Preferred background includes SNSPDs, TESs, KIDs, microfabrication, thin-film deposition, lithography, etching, microwave/RF characterization, electromagnetic simulation, Python, and quantum optics measurements.

Funding: this is a full-time postdoctoral appointment with an expected salary range of $72,879–$121,465 plus comprehensive benefits.

Location: Lemont, Illinois, United States.

How to apply: submit an online application through the Argonne Workday portal using the provided link. Review the job description carefully and prepare for standard background and access authorization checks.
