About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in human-swarm interaction, robotics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and human-computer interaction.

This project, supervised by Dr Mohammad Soorati in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, focuses on how humans can communicate high-level intent to robot swarms and how swarms can explain their behaviour, decisions, intentions, and emerging problems in intuitive ways. The research may explore graphical interfaces, natural-language interaction, explainable AI, adaptive visualisation, mixed-initiative teaming, simulation, and/or physical swarm-robotics platforms.

The successful candidate will have access to SooratiLab robotic platforms including robot dogs, ground rovers, quadcopters, and robotic arms. The project is designed for students interested in autonomous systems, multi-robot behaviour, and scalable human-swarm teaming.

Funding: Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide). Funding options include Horizon Europe fee waivers, Presidential Bursaries, and school studentships; some awards may cover tuition and provide a living stipend. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.

Entry requirements: UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in computer science, robotics, AI, engineering, HCI, psychology, cognitive science, or a related field. Strong programming skills and independent research ability are expected.

How to apply: Apply online for the Research programme for 2027/28, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, search for PhD Computer Science (7089), and add the supervisor name in the application. Include a research proposal, CV, two references, transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if needed.

Location: Southampton, United Kingdom.
