About this position
This PhD project investigates whether quantum computing can improve decision-making for future energy systems under uncertainty. Based at the University of Southampton, the research will connect hybrid quantum–classical computing with large-scale stochastic optimisation for the net-zero energy transition.
Energy-system planning requires long-term decisions about generation, storage, and infrastructure before future demand, weather, and renewable generation are known. The project will develop algorithms that use limited quantum hardware selectively within classical optimisation frameworks, rather than attempting to place an entire energy-system model on a quantum computer.
Research directions include embedding quantum optimisation and sampling methods into classical decomposition approaches; solving scenario subproblems; addressing combinatorial planning decisions; generating or selecting scenarios; and coordinating long-term investment with short-term operations. Variational quantum algorithms, quantum annealing, and emerging quantum optimisation methods will be studied alongside state-of-the-art classical techniques.
The algorithms will be evaluated through real-world applications involving uncertain renewable generation, long-duration energy storage, infrastructure investment, and system resilience. A key aim is to determine when quantum resources provide computational value, how current hardware constrains performance, and how methods should develop as quantum hardware improves.
The successful researcher will join Southampton’s interdisciplinary quantum technology environment and receive specialist training through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering. The programme includes an industry placement and opportunities for extended research visits.
