About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton explores the design of brightly luminescent lanthanide, or rare-earth, coordination complexes for use as single-photon emitters in quantum photonics.

The research will focus on near-infrared-emitting ions such as ytterbium, neodymium and erbium. Using molecular synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry, the project will create new ultra-efficient emitters and investigate their suitability for applications including quantum memories, quantum computing and quantum cryptography.

A key feature of the work is the ability to tailor single-photon emitters at the single-ion level through molecular coordination chemistry. The resulting compounds will be studied for integration into emerging photonic devices and for compatibility with established telecommunications technologies, including fibre optics and silicon nitride waveguides.

The researcher will develop expertise in synthetic organic chemistry, coordination chemistry, photoluminescence spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The project provides access to specialist facilities including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and advanced X-ray diffraction.

Research activity will include group meetings, school seminars and participation in national and international conferences. The University of Southampton also provides professional training through the Quantum Technologies DTP programme and transferable-skills support through the PGR Development Hub.
