About this position
Central European University is offering up to 5 funded PhD places in Late Antique, Medieval and Early Modern Studies for the 2027/28 academic year. This is a four-year doctoral program accredited in Austria and the United States, designed for students interested in historical research spanning late antiquity through the early modern period.
The program is housed within Historical Studies at CEU and is especially strong in the history of Central Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, while also welcoming projects on topics extending from the United States to Central and Eastern Asia. A key feature of the program is its conscious interdisciplinarity: students are encouraged to pursue their own research interests rather than fit into faculty-led projects.
Training focuses on working with original sources and developing the language skills needed for advanced historical scholarship. CEU provides instruction in a range of languages, including Latin, Ancient Greek, and Syriac. In the first year, students are based in Vienna, where they take courses in historiography, methodology, language preparation, and electives relevant to their research. The second and third years may involve archival research, field trips, and conference participation, alongside a mandatory TA-ship that provides teaching experience and opportunities to organize conferences and workshops. The fourth year is dedicated to dissertation writing, with support from faculty and the broader PhD community.
Funding includes a full tuition waiver, a monthly stipend, and a research allowance currently valued at 5,200 EUR for the duration of the program. The position is awarded on the basis of academic merit, and CEU highlights dedicated PhD office space, regular talks by external speakers, and close links to the Viennese academic community, including local universities, libraries, and archives.
Applicants should submit a research proposal, two letters of recommendation, and a writing sample in English through the CEU application portal. The application deadline is 15 January 2027. Prospective students are encouraged to contact faculty members in advance to discuss their proposed projects; for questions, the PhD coordinator is Dr. Margaretha Boockmann.
