About this position
The University of Edinburgh Business School invites applications for the full-time PhD in Management Science and Analytics, starting in September 2027. The three-year doctoral programme develops expertise in quantitative decision-making, operational research, management science and data-driven decision support.
Students receive advanced coursework, research-methods training, seminars and workshops, and close supervisory support from an academic team. Research may connect with the University's Schools of Business, Informatics, Mathematics and Engineering, as well as industry and policy partners. Relevant research areas include Management Science and Business Economics, Accounting and Finance, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Marketing, Organisation Studies, Strategy, Climate Change and Sustainability, Corporate Finance, Leadership, Organisations and Society, FinTech and digital tourism.
Applicants should normally hold a relevant postgraduate master's degree with at least 65% overall or equivalent and a dissertation worth one third of the degree credits at distinction level. A 3,000–5,000-word research proposal, personal statement, transcripts, degree documents, two references and English-language evidence are required. The programme has no application fee. Funding is not automatic, although applicants may pursue Business School scholarships and other funding sources.
The application deadline is 31 May 2027. Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify a potential supervisor and subject group, prepare a research proposal, and apply well before the deadline, particularly if funding or a visa is required.

What's required
Applicants should normally hold a postgraduate master's degree from an accredited UK or overseas institution, including a relevant master's degree with at least 65% overall or equivalent and a dissertation worth one third of the degree credits at distinction level or equivalent. Applicants whose master's degree lacks the required dissertation component need a distinction or equivalent. Applicants may apply while completing a master's degree, subject to meeting the required standard. A rigorous 3,000–5,000-word research proposal, personal statement, relevant knowledge and training skills, degree certificates, grading scheme, transcripts, two references including at least one academic reference, and evidence of English proficiency are required; certified translations are needed for documents not in English. Applicants are interviewed by a panel, and the proposal's fit with faculty expertise and research themes is important. English can be demonstrated through accepted tests such as IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, TOEFL-iBT at the stated required scores, C1/C2, Oxford ELLT, Oxford Test of English Advanced, or an eligible English-taught degree or professional qualification.
How to apply
Review the entry requirements and identify a potential supervisor or up to three supervisors and a subject group. Prepare a 3,000–5,000-word research proposal, personal statement, CV and required supporting documents, then submit the application through the University of Edinburgh Applications Hub on Euclid. Apply separately for relevant scholarships before their deadlines if seeking funding.
