About this position

Stockholm University is advertising a PhD position in Materials Chemistry focused on cost-effective carbon dioxide separation. The project explores new materials and scrubbing liquids for CO2 capture using aminated nanoparticles, polymers, or colloids. The research aims to reduce the heating energy needed to release captured CO2 in later process steps, lowering overall energy demand and potentially reducing harmful emissions from degradation products during cyclic use.

The work will emphasize thermochemistry, phase diagrams, and mechanistic questions, with room to adapt the project to the selected candidate’s interests and skills. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR) and is carried out in close collaboration with Professor Jiayin Yuan’s group at Stockholm University and Professor Christophe Duwig’s group at KTH. The main supervisor listed in the announcement is Professor Niklas Hedin.

Eligibility: applicants must satisfy Stockholm University’s doctoral admission requirements. This includes a second-cycle degree, or at least 240 higher education credits with at least 60 credits at advanced level, or equivalent knowledge. For specific eligibility in materials chemistry, candidates need a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or physics, plus an independent degree project of at least 30 advanced-level credits. Strong English communication skills, analytical and creative thinking, initiative, independence, and teamwork are important selection criteria.

Funding and employment: this is a full-time, fixed-term doctoral employment for up to four years. The position may include limited teaching, research, and administrative duties (up to 20%).

Application: submit your application through Stockholm University’s recruitment system. Include a cover letter, CV, and all documents requested in the application form. The deadline is 2026-08-09.
