About this position
PhD opportunity at the Center for Plant Biotechnology and Genomics (CBGP), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid / INIA, Spain. The Root Organogenesis, Regeneration and Rooting Lab is recruiting for a PhD project on Molecular Mechanisms of Root Stem Cell Regeneration Under Climate Instability.
The project is led by Dr. Miguel A. Moreno Risueño and Dr. Mary Paz González García and is funded through Project PID2025-172667NB-I00 by MICIU/AEI / FSE+. The research focuses on how climate change-induced temperature fluctuations affect root stem cell formation and tissue regeneration, with emphasis on cell fate transitions, molecular feedback loops, telomere dynamics, and auxin signaling.
Students will work with cutting-edge methods including single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), AI-powered 3D confocal imaging, ML-based segmentation for telomere dynamics, and spatial transcriptomics (Molecular Cartography) at single-cell resolution. The position is especially relevant for candidates interested in plant biology, developmental genetics, biotechnology, bioinformatics, and computational analysis.
Eligibility: a Bachelor's plus Master's degree in Biotechnology, Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, or a related discipline. The post also highlights desirable experience in plant molecular biology, developmental genetics, or computational biology, and strong R programming skills as an asset.
Funding: fully funded 4-year predoctoral contract with competitive salary according to the national PhD scale and UPM regulations, full social security, healthcare, tuition reimbursement, AEI progression, and a fully funded 3-month research stay at a leading international lab.
Deadline: December 1st. Interviews are expected in December.
How to apply: send a single PDF containing your CV, motivation letter, Bachelor's and Master's certificates, complete transcripts, and contact details for at least one referee who has agreed to provide a reference. Use the subject line PhD Application – [Your First and Last Name] and email the supervisors listed in the post.
