About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands, with a secondment at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft).

This multidisciplinary project sits at the intersection of environmental psychology, lighting research, building physics, civil engineering, architecture, and environmental science. The research asks how nature-inspired facade design and visual exposure to nature can reduce stress, improve mental wellbeing, increase tolerance to thermal discomfort, and help lower cooling demand in homes during summer overheating.

The PhD is part of the wider NWO KIC project “Nature4Homes”, which aims to develop nature-driven building skin interventions for energy efficiency, occupant comfort, health, and biodiversity in dwellings. The project involves collaboration with industry partners, including shading system manufacturers, and testing at TU Delft’s Green Village living lab.

You will investigate visual patterns from nature across different layers of the building skin, including the facade itself and the view through windows. Methods mentioned include literature review, experiments in virtual reality and real-world settings, co-creation of facade elements, field studies, collection of self-reported, physiological, and environmental data, plus analysis using building simulation, computer vision, and advanced statistical methods.

Supervision is by Dr. Kynthia Chamilothori and Prof. Yvonne de Kort at TU/e, with Dr. Eleonora Brembilla at TU Delft. The successful candidate will be based at TU/e and spend time at TU Delft during the secondment.

This is a PhD opening. The deadline is 2026-11-02. Apply through the AcademicTransfer vacancy page linked in the post.
