About this position
Postgraduate research project at the University of Southampton leading to a PhD in next-generation granular pharmaceuticals via ultrasonic spray drying.
This project investigates how ultrasonic atomisation can improve the manufacture of pharmaceutical powders by producing more uniform, stable, and high-quality granules while reducing energy use. The research combines experimental investigation, advanced particle characterisation, and process modelling to understand how processing parameters such as ultrasonic frequency, feed concentration, drying temperature, and airflow rate affect particle size, morphology, density, flowability, compressibility, and dissolution behaviour.
Students will work on pharmaceutical processing, particle engineering, spray drying, and drug delivery systems, using techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser diffraction. The project aims to develop an optimised and scalable ultrasonic spray drying process, a validated model, and prototype granular pharmaceutical formulations.
Funding: competition funded.
Entry requirements: a 2:1 honours degree is required. The project is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and is aligned with the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
Deadline: 30 June 2027.
Applicants should review the project page and full entry requirements, then apply through the University of Southampton postgraduate research project application route.
