About this position
PhD opportunity at Quadram Institute Bioscience in Norwich, United Kingdom, within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP).
The project is titled Role of non-canonical autophagy in liver lipid metabolism in response to unhealthy diets and sits at the intersection of autophagy, liver lipid metabolism, fatty liver disease, obesity, hepatocyte biology, LC3-associated phagocytosis, cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, and translational biomedical research.
The research aims to define mechanisms controlling lipid uptake and metabolism in the liver in response to high-fat/unhealthy diets, with the goal of identifying targets that preserve liver metabolic health and prevent disease progression. The successful PhD student will receive broad training in preclinical in vivo models, in vitro work, confocal microscopy, spectral flow cytometry, and related cellular and molecular biology methods.
This is a collaborative project supervised by Dr N Beraza and Rushworth, with work spanning Quadram Institute and the University of East Anglia. The project is designed to give the student experience across different labs and institutions, plus opportunities to present at conferences and meetings.
Funding is fully provided through a 4-year NRPDTP PhD studentship. It includes tuition fees, an annual stipend for living costs, and a Research Training Support Grant. The advertised stipend rate is £21,805 for 2026/27, plus £5,000 per year RTSG.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have at least a UK-equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 and meet the English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component. The project is full-time.
Application notes: shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2, 3, and 4 February 2027. The post directs applicants to the NRPDTP website for full eligibility and application guidance, including required Personal and Research statement templates.
