About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Photonic Integration group, focused on non-volatile dual-mode optical memory for unconventional computing. The project explores new materials and tailored material properties for use in a photonic memory concept, combining multi-level non-volatile storage with electronic and photonic read/write methods. The end goal is a novel 3D-stacked multilevel memory device compatible with both electronic and photonic chips.

This research sits at the intersection of integrated photonics, semiconductor materials, and next-generation compute hardware. It is motivated by the growing need for faster and more energy-efficient computing beyond conventional CMOS scaling. The topic is closely linked to applications such as ultrahigh-bandwidth telecommunications, quantum and optical computing, AI datacenters, non-intrusive sensing, LiDAR, and intelligent manufacturing.

The position is embedded in the Photonic Integration group at TU/e, a research environment with long-standing expertise in integrated photonics and strong links to EU projects in photonic computing. The project is funded through a Holland High Tech grant in a jointly proposed research effort by TU/e and Motion Imager, giving the PhD candidate an opportunity to work on research with direct industrial relevance.

Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in physics or engineering (or an equivalent university degree), with desired experience in semiconductors, photonics, or electronics. Applicants should be comfortable in interdisciplinary and industry-connected research, work independently, and have strong analytical and research-oriented skills. Fluent spoken and written English at C1 level is required.

Employment conditions include a full-time, four-year PhD appointment with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The salary follows the Dutch Universities Collective Labour Agreement, scale P, with gross monthly pay between €3,204 and €4,051, plus a year-end bonus and annual vacation pay. TU/e also offers training and support, commuting and home-working allowances, and access to campus facilities.
