About this position
Doctoral position in Peace and Development Research at the University of Gothenburg, focused on host-state responses to transnational repression in the Nordic-Baltic region.
The project sits within an international research initiative examining how authoritarian regimes attempt to punish, deter, undermine, and silence diaspora activism, and how host states respond through legal and policy measures. The PhD student will contribute to a work package on the translation of norms into state responses, using a comparative perspective across two to three countries such as Sweden, Norway, and/or Estonia.
Research interests/keywords: transnational repression, peace and development research, international relations, global development, human rights, migration, security, governance, civil society, law and policy, comparative politics.
Eligibility highlights: applicants need general doctoral eligibility plus specific eligibility in International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Global Development Studies, or equivalent. Strong English skills are required, along with proficiency in relevant languages for the selected case countries.
What the PhD involves: four years of full-time doctoral study, including one year of coursework and three years of research, leading to a dissertation. The candidate is expected to work physically in Gothenburg with the project team. Departmental duties may be assigned up to 20% of full-time employment and will extend the study period accordingly.
