About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, focused on physical control at the microscale. The project sits at the intersection of soft robotics, microsystems, microfabrication, nonlinear mechanics, and multiphysics, with inspiration from autonomous control in nature and fluidic neural networks.

Access to advanced microscale fabrication facilities is provided, including the Microfab lab and related TU/e infrastructure.

The position is supervised by Luuk van Laake and embedded in the newly founded Neuromorphic Mechanics group, connected to Neuromorphic Engineering led by Yoeri van de Burgt and the Microsystems section headed by Jaap den Toonder. The broader environment includes the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems and strong links to research groups and facilities in Eindhoven and internationally.

Eligibility highlights: an excellent MSc degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied physics, microsystems, or a related field; strong motivation; ability to combine experiments, simulations, and theory; and preferably experience in microfabrication. Applicants should also be comfortable supervising BSc and MSc students and have C1-level English.

Funding and employment: this is a full-time PhD employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary follows Dutch university scale P, with a gross monthly base salary of €3,204–€4,051, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus, along with standard TU/e employment benefits.
