The University of Warwick is offering a PhD studentship on NSF Swarf: A Novel Forging Process for Closed-Loop Recycling of Metallic Swarf . This project sits within the Advanced Steel Research Team and explores how machining waste can be transformed back into valuable material through a patented near-solidus forging approach. Machining can remove 60–90% of a component’s material, creating large amounts of swarf that are often discarded and mixed with lower-grade waste. The Warwick process propos...

About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in Post-Impact Fatigue Behaviour of Titanium Aerospace Alloys.

This doctoral project is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and focuses on how impact damage affects fatigue cracking in titanium aerospace components. The research combines Materials Science, Aerospace Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering to study how alloy composition, strain-rate-dependent microstructural changes, and damage evolution influence crack initiation and early crack growth.

The project is carried out in partnership with Rolls-Royce and addresses a major challenge for next-generation aero-engines: improving the damage tolerance of lightweight titanium alloys used in fan and compressor components. The work will examine both low-velocity impacts from ground handling/maintenance and high-velocity foreign object damage (FOD) during flight, linking these events to reduced fatigue life.

Students will gain hands-on experience with advanced experimental and characterisation techniques, including impact testing, cyclic fatigue experiments, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and nanoindentation. The project is well suited to applicants interested in fatigue, failure analysis, aerospace materials, and microstructural analysis.

Funding: This is a competition-funded PhD project. The page does not specify the stipend or exact tuition coverage, so applicants should check the funding information on the university page.

Eligibility: Applicants should have a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent. The project may especially appeal to candidates with a background or strong interest in materials science and engineering research.

Deadline: 1 January 2027.

How to apply: Read the project page, confirm you meet the entry requirements, and submit an application through the University of Southampton postgraduate research admissions route. Review the full fees and funding section before applying.
