About this position

PhD opening at Karolinska Institutet in Solna, Sweden, within the Saei Lab at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC), in collaboration with Prof. Mikael Rydén and Prof. Yihai Cao.

The project focuses on proteomics, metabolomics, insulin resistance, and adipocyte biology. The research aims to define molecular mechanisms driving insulin resistance in adipocytes and how this process is reversed after bariatric surgery. The work integrates deep plasma proteomics, untargeted metabolomics, and tissue proteomics from bariatric surgery patients, followed by functional testing in human 3D adipocyte spheroids and mechanistic follow-up using CRISPR/Cas9 or gene knockdown.

Methodological keywords include mass spectrometry-based proteomics, chemical proteomics, multi-omics, mammalian cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics. Applicants should have a strong background in biomedicine, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or metabolism, plus practical experience in at least two relevant areas such as mammalian cell culture, molecular biology/biochemistry, and quantitative biological data analysis. R or Python skills are requested for bioinformatics work.

This is a full-time PhD position for up to 4 years. The post states that the start date is by agreement. Deadline: 2026-10-09.

How to apply: submit your application via the Varbi recruitment system with a cover letter, CV, thesis/publications if any, supporting documents, and proof of eligibility. Contact [email protected] for more information.
