About this position
This funded Doctor of Philosophy project at the University of Southampton will investigate the integration of quantum communication into emerging wireless networks, supporting the development of global quantum networking technologies toward 6G.
The research focuses on continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), in which information is modulated onto the phase or amplitude of an electromagnetic wave. By using off-the-shelf wireless transceivers, CV-QKD could enable quantum-secured applications in areas such as banking and healthcare.
The project addresses two major challenges in current wireless CV-QKD systems: limited transmission distance caused by atmospheric turbulence and multipath propagation, and secret-key generation rates that are substantially lower than classical communication data rates. The PhD researcher will design 5G-compliant error-correction codes to improve CV-QKD robustness against channel impairments.
A second research direction will exploit the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform used in 5G. By using multiple OFDM subcarriers, the project aims to increase secret-key rates while optimising wireless spectrum access. The work combines quantum communications, quantum cryptography, wireless communications, telecommunications, signal processing and network technology.
The project is supervised by Dr Chao Xu and offers cross-disciplinary research training with intensive collaboration with industrial partners. The knowledge generated will also contribute to teaching and to the development of quantum research capacity among students at Southampton.
