About this position

The University of Edinburgh School of Engineering is offering several PhD research opportunities in the field of ocean modelling and marine hydrodynamics. One fully-funded position is available as part of the EU-INTERCHANGE project, focusing on dynamic downscaling for regional ocean model processes. The project aims to improve the accuracy and spatial resolution of regional ocean model data, with applications in offshore energy, aquaculture, and climate adaptation strategies. The research will involve investigating downscaling strategies for various regional ocean processes, including wave energy propagation and marine hydrodynamics, using advanced computational techniques such as machine learning.

Another opportunity is available through the E5 Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), focusing on marine hydrodynamics simulations for high energy flow sites. This position is supported by competitive NERC funding. Both projects are based at the University of Edinburgh School of Engineering, within the Institute of Infrastructure and Environment, and offer the chance to collaborate with international partners such as TU Delft and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Applicants should have a strong background in Engineering, Oceanography, Computational Science, or a related field, and be proficient in programming languages like Python or MATLAB. Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset are essential. Tuition fees and a stipend are available for Home applicants, while funding for international applicants is limited and competitive. The deadline for applications is December 15, 2025. For more information or informal enquiries, contact Dr Athanasios Angeloudis at [email protected].
