About this position

The ACRO research group at KU Leuven, located on the Diepenbeek campus, is seeking a PhD candidate for research in robotics, specifically focusing on robust localisation and mapping in outdoor and dynamic scenes. ACRO is a multidisciplinary group that brings together expertise from Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, and is part of the Manufacturing & Automation core lab of Flanders Make @ KULeuven. The group collaborates closely with Flemish companies and stakeholders, conducting applied research that translates academic findings into industrial and societal applications across sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, logistics, healthcare, construction, and waste recycling. The PhD project centers on state estimation, localisation, and mapping (SLAM) in dynamic and uncertain environments.

Research will involve integrating commercially available sensors and developing resilient algorithms that combine first-principles modeling with modern machine learning techniques. The aim is to advance robust perception for both augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) applications and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) operating in real-world, dynamic settings. The successful candidate will join a stimulating, international research environment, benefit from collaboration with leading companies and research institutions, and receive guidance from experienced researchers and professors.

The position offers a competitive salary and a flexible working environment. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and provides support for accessibility and other needs. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, with experience in programming (preferably Python, C/C++), strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and motivation for impactful research.

The application deadline is November 20, 2025. For further information, candidates may contact Prof.

Eric Demeester at [email protected].
