Queen’s University Belfast is offering a fully funded PhD investigating how microbes interact and how antibiotic resistance evolves. The project examines the evolution of the commensal microbiome under repeated exposure to pathogens, with particular attention to how antibiotic resistance influences these outcomes. The research will be based in the School of Biological Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast. The project is led by Rachel Wheatley, a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Group Leader, wit...

About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in Sex-Specific Phage Therapy for Conflict Wound Healing.

This competition-funded doctoral project sits in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and focuses on engineered bacteriophage therapies for complex musculoskeletal conflict wounds. The research addresses two major battlefield challenges: antimicrobial resistance and impaired vascular regeneration. A key theme is whether dual-function phages can both reduce bacterial burden and support tissue repair, with an explicit focus on sex-specific responses to injury and treatment.

The project will develop and use advanced musculoskeletal trauma models to study, in real time, the relationship between bacterial infection, vascularisation, and tissue repair. Methods may include 3D in vitro cell and tissue models of MSK trauma, phage engineering and characterisation, microbiological assays, advanced imaging, quantitative vascular analysis, and molecular approaches to investigate mechanisms of infection and regeneration.

Students will join an interdisciplinary research environment spanning musculoskeletal regeneration, phage engineering, microbiology, and vascular biology, with engagement from defence-related expertise including MOD and Dstl interests in conflict wounds, antimicrobial resistance, military medicine, and female health. The project offers strong translational relevance and training in biological modelling, imaging, quantitative analysis, and interdisciplinary research skills.

Eligibility: applicants should have a 2:1 honours degree. This is a PhD project, and the closing date is 18 December 2026.

Institution: University of Southampton, United Kingdom.
