About this position

Karolinska Institutet is advertising a doctoral (PhD) student position in spatial proteomics of mitochondrial disease within the Proteomes of Metabolism research group led by Assistant Professor Florian Rosenberger at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB). The project sits at the intersection of single-cell proteomics, spatial proteomics, Deep Visual Proteomics, bioinformatics, image analysis, machine learning, and mitochondrial biology.

The doctoral project aims to explain why identical mitochondrial mutations can produce different clinical phenotypes by combining high-content imaging, AI-guided segmentation, laser microdissection, ultra-sensitive mass spectrometry, and multiplexed imaging of OXPHOS complexes in an established mouse model. The student will help build an OXPHOS-stratified multi-modal atlas and study how subcellular organisation changes along a disease trajectory.

The role includes wet-lab work (histology, multiplexed staining), imaging, image analysis, bioinformatic analysis, computational method development, manuscript preparation, and participation in doctoral courses, journal clubs, and conferences. The environment is highly collaborative and international, with close interaction between experimental and computational work.

Eligibility: a master's degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, or a related field; experience with molecular biology methods, histology/immunostaining, bioinformatics and/or image analysis, Python, and version-controlled code development (GitHub link required). English proficiency equivalent to English B/English 6 is required. Preferred experience includes deep learning, proteomics, Deep Visual Proteomics, mouse genetics, mitochondrial biology, and metabolic disease research.
