About this position

Karolinska Institutet is advertising a postdoctoral position in bioinformatics and translational breast cancer research within the Department of Oncology-Pathology in Solna, Sweden. The research is led by Professor Johan Hartman and is embedded in a highly collaborative environment involving clinicians, bioinformaticians, data scientists, and biologists, with close links to Karolinska Institutet, KTH, and SciLifeLab.

The project focuses on clinically relevant and translational studies in breast cancer, especially precision medicine and diagnostics. The group works to improve prediction of individual treatment response, understand tumor heterogeneity and interactions between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment, and identify biomarkers with future diagnostic and therapeutic potential. The successful candidate will have access to unique patient databases and will be expected to contribute to research at a high international level.

The postdoctoral researcher will primarily analyze genomic, transcriptomic, and DNA methylation data. Tasks include identifying somatic mutations and copy number alterations, performing gene expression, signature, and pathway analyses, and integrating multi-omics data using machine learning approaches. The role also includes development and maintenance of computational pipelines for genomic and transcriptomic analysis, including datasets from single-cell and spatial omics technologies. There may also be opportunities to analyze large-scale clinical and population-based registry data and apply biostatistical methods to clinically relevant questions.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in a quantitative field such as bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, or computer science. Strong programming skills in R or Python and experience with Linux are required, along with a publication record showing experience in sequencing-data analysis. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to organize and document research data are also required. Experience with spatial transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing, multi-omics integration, computational pathology, AI tools, biostatistics, clinical cohort analysis, oncology, and cancer-related data resources such as TCGA, COSMIC, and dbSNP are considered meritorious.

The position is based at BioClinicum in Solna and is a fixed-term appointment for two years with possible extension. A PhD or equivalent foreign doctorate that is judged comparable to a Swedish doctorate is required, and this requirement must be fulfilled by the time the appointment decision is made. It is preferable that the doctorate was awarded within the last three years, although older degrees may be accepted if there are special reasons. Required qualifications include a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, computer science, or another equivalent quantitative field; strong skills in R or Python; ability to work efficiently in a Linux command-line environment; prior experience analyzing sequencing data such as DNA, RNA, or methylation data, demonstrated through scientific publications; basic knowledge of molecular biology and/or cancer biology; excellent spoken and written English; and good ability to manage, document, and structure research data. Merits include spatial transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing, multi-omics integration, computational pathology tools, biostatistics, prospective or retrospective clinical cohort analysis, oncology research, use of AI tools, and familiarity with databases such as TCGA, COSMIC, and dbSNP.
