About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the area of spatiotemporal light generation, frequency-gradient metasurfaces, nanophotonics, and ultrafast optics. The project focuses on controlling light in space, time, and frequency to enable ultrafast beam steering, temporal focusing, and self-torque generation on femtosecond timescales.

You will work in the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) group and contribute to the full research cycle: design of 2D/3D metasurfaces, electromagnetic and dispersive modelling, nanofabrication in TU/e cleanroom facilities, and femtosecond optical experiments to characterize structured light fields. The project is part of SPARK, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network connecting academic and industrial partners across Europe.

Supervision is by Dr. Ahmed H. Dorrah at TU/e, with Prof. Marco Piccardo at INESC MN, Portugal, as co-supervisor. The PhD includes international research stays: 6 months at INESC MN in Portugal and 3 months at NKT Photonics in Denmark, plus network-wide training schools, workshops, webinars, and conferences.

Eligibility and requirements: a Master’s degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Optics/Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field; strong foundations in electromagnetics, optics, and/or photonics; experience with scientific programming or modelling tools such as Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, Lumerical, or Tidy3D; interest in metasurfaces, structured light, nanofabrication, or ultrafast experiments; and strong English communication skills. MSCA mobility and doctoral-degree eligibility rules apply.

Funding and conditions: full-time employment for 4 years, with an intermediate assessment after 9 months. Salary is €3,204–€4,051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus, along with Dutch university employment benefits and support services.

What's required

A Master’s degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Optics/Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field is required. Applicants should have a strong foundation in electromagnetics, optics, and/or photonics, experience with scientific programming or electromagnetic modelling (e.g. Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, Lumerical, Tidy3D, or similar), and interest or experience in nanophotonics, metasurfaces, structured light, ultrafast optics, nanofabrication, or optical experiments. Strong written and spoken English is required. Experience with femtosecond optics, dispersion engineering, nonlinear optics, nanofabrication, or structured-light characterization is an advantage. MSCA eligibility applies: no doctoral degree and compliance with the mobility rule for the Netherlands.
