About this position
PhD opportunity at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Technology, focused on biomethanation of syngas, climate impact, and techno-economic assessment.
The doctoral project is hosted by the Department of Energy and Technology at SLU and is part of the national Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC), a transdisciplinary center involving universities, industry, public organizations, and support from the Swedish Energy Agency. The research will model and simulate biomethane systems from feedstock supply and thermal gasification through to biomethane production, including integration of syngas biomethanation with conventional anaerobic digestion and the use of exogenous green hydrogen from electrolysis.
The successful candidate will assess energy balance, climate impact, and techno-economic performance, and will be expected to read and critically evaluate scientific literature in English, publish in journals, present at conferences, participate in doctoral courses, and contribute to departmental activities.
Eligibility and requirements: a second-cycle (Master’s) qualification or equivalent; specific eligibility for doctoral studies in Technology with at least 90 credits in technology-related courses, including an independent thesis and at least 30 credits at Master’s level; a Master of Science in Energy Systems Engineering, Energy Technology, or a related field is preferred. Applicants should have documented experience in data programming and modelling and strong English communication skills. Merits include biomass conversion technologies, Python, Life Cycle Assessment, techno-economic analysis, scientific writing, knowledge of the Swedish energy system, and Swedish language ability.
Funding: employment as a doctoral student for 4 years, with salary according to the local collective agreement and fixed salary progression.
Location: Uppsala, Sweden.
