About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in wide-area ocean environmental inference using networks of uncrewed maritime systems.

This postgraduate research project sits in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and focuses on how acoustic measurements exchanged between uncrewed underwater and surface vehicles, together with distributed sensors, can be used to infer ocean environmental conditions over large areas.

The research spans underwater acoustics, acoustic tomography, signal processing, estimation and inverse methods, machine learning, and environmental modelling. The project aims to estimate parameters such as sound speed structure, temperature distribution, water-column variability, and related oceanographic characteristics from distributed acoustic observations.

A key theme is developing methods that work for arbitrary fleets of maritime systems, meaning networks with changing numbers of platforms, different sensor capabilities, dynamic geometry, and assets entering or leaving the network during operation. This makes the project especially relevant to future autonomous marine operations, sonar performance prediction, acoustic communications, navigation, and surveillance.

Funding: The project is marked as competition funded.

Entry requirements: Applicants should normally hold at least a 2:1 honours degree. A strong interest in acoustics, signal processing, inverse problems, machine learning, or ocean/environmental systems would be beneficial.

Deadline: 18 December 2026.

Interested applicants should review the project page, read the full entry requirements and funding details, and apply through the University of Southampton postgraduate research application process.
