About this position

PhD Opportunity: Resilient Energy Transition Planning for Critical Technology Sectors at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak.

The HoPES Research Group is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to work on a timely project at the intersection of energy transition planning, energy systems modelling, mathematical optimisation, critical technologies, and public policy. The research focuses on how governments and industries can make better long-term infrastructure decisions under uncertainty, including energy security, geopolitical uncertainty, critical mineral constraints, supply-chain disruptions, and rising electricity demand from AI data centres, semiconductor manufacturing, electric vehicles, and hydrogen.

The PhD will develop next-generation optimisation frameworks for resilient, adaptive, and future-ready energy transition planning. The successful candidate may engage with policy institutes and think-tanks, collaborate with researchers across ASEAN, Australia, and the UK, and contribute to high-impact journal publications and policy-oriented research.

Eligibility highlights: candidates with backgrounds in engineering, energy systems, industrial engineering, mathematics, economics, operations research, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. The post is aimed at a PhD candidate and is suitable for applicants interested in solving complex real-world problems with strong policy and industry relevance.

Funding: competitive research support may be available, including a stipend and/or tuition fee waiver, subject to funding availability and eligibility.

How to apply: send your CV and a brief statement of research interests to Prof Ir Viknesh Andiappan at [email protected].
