About this position

PhD or Masters opportunity in predictive biomechanics for aortic dissection prevention at the University of Auckland. This project is based at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute and sits at the intersection of clinical surgery, cardiovascular science, biomedical engineering, biomechanics, medical imaging, and data science.

The research focuses on aortic disease, especially aortic dissection, with the aim of identifying biomechanical factors that better predict which patients with dilated aortas are at risk. The project uses CT and 4D flow MRI, biomechanical analysis, and data integration to support the development of an AI platform that combines imaging, clinical, and demographic factors for improved diagnosis and earlier preventative surgery.

Students will join a multidisciplinary team of bioengineers and academic cardiovascular surgeons. The work is highly translational and aims to improve treatment protocols and patient outcomes in aortic disease.

Eligibility and preferred background: applicants should have a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanics, Medical Imaging, or Medicine. A GPA equivalent to first-class honours in the qualifying degree is required. Experience in biomedical engineering or medical imaging is an advantage. The ideal candidate is motivated, interested in mechanical analysis, cardiovascular health, and AI in clinical diagnostics, and comfortable working across disciplines.

Funding: the project is funded through a Heart Foundation Project Grant and the student will be funded through a University of Auckland scholarship, subject to eligibility criteria and funding availability.
