About this position
The Laboratory for Microelectronics at the University of Freiburg is advertising an open PhD position within the EU-funded BRAINET Doctoral Network. The project sits at the intersection of Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, and Medical Science, with a strong emphasis on CMOS integrated circuits, mixed-signal microelectronics, brain-computer interfaces, and bioelectronic medicine.
The doctoral researcher will develop CMOS-integrated neural interface ASICs for distributed brain stimulation and recording. The work includes architecture design for inter-implant communication and synchronization, arbitrary-waveform stimulation, low-noise recording front-ends, on-chip neural data pre-processing, and progression from specification and architecture through layout, fabrication, and electrical verification.
This opportunity is especially suitable for candidates with an MSc in electrical engineering with specialization in microelectronics, plus a strong interest in signal processing and biomedical interfaces. Applicants must have very good English skills (B2 level). Marie Skłodowska-Curie eligibility rules apply: candidates may be of any nationality, must not already hold a PhD, and must satisfy the mobility rule. Successful candidates must enroll in a doctoral program in an EU Member State or Associated Country.
The position is full-time, funded according to Marie Skłodowska-Curie regulations, and runs for three years. The advertised gross monthly package includes a living allowance, mobility allowance, and a family allowance if applicable. The application deadline is 12 July 2026.
To apply, submit an English application with supporting documents and reference number 00005061. Contact Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Kuhl at [email protected] for further information.
