About this position
PhD position in computer vision for video-based measurement of breathing and pulse at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
This doctoral project is situated in Computer Science and aims to develop video-based methods for monitoring human physiological signals such as heart rate, breathing patterns, skin temperature, and pupil dilation. The broader goal is to estimate underlying states such as concentration, anxiety, and depression from subtle physiological responses that are harder to consciously control than facial expressions or speech. The research is academically strong and also highly practical, because current clinical and cognitive-science approaches often require special measurement equipment that can be intrusive.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with researchers in perceptual neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet in Solna, giving the work an interdisciplinary environment spanning computer vision, machine learning, signal processing, and neuro/behavioral science. The suggested supervisor is Prof. Hedvig Kjellström.
Eligibility is specific: applicants must satisfy the standard doctoral admission requirements and hold a master’s degree with a main focus on machine learning, artificial intelligence, signal processing, or computer vision. An additional requirement is English equivalent to English B/6. The selection process gives weight to independence, teamwork, professionalism, and the ability to handle complex tasks. Documented experience in machine learning, especially deep neural networks, and in computer vision, image processing, or signal processing is expected. Experience with medical applications and 3D analysis of humans in video is considered a merit.
The position is a doctoral employment at KTH, not a scholarship. The appointment is full-time and time-limited, normally for up to four years, and doctoral employees receive salary according to KTH’s doctoral salary agreement and employment benefits. Two positions are available.

English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is mandatory. The ideal candidate should have documented experience in machine learning, especially programming deep neural networks, as well as documented experience in computer vision, image processing, or signal processing. Experience with medical applications and 3D analysis of humans in video is meritorious. Strong motivation, persistence, independence, collaboration skills, professionalism, and ability to analyze complex problems are important selection criteria.
