About this position

PhD Studentship at The University of Manchester in minewater geothermal systems and closed-loop geothermal technologies.

This project, titled MINELOOP: Investigating MINEwater Systems using Closed-LOOP Geothermal Technologies, focuses on how borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) and suspended high-density polyethylene U-tube systems interact with flooded minewater voids. The research aims to develop low-risk, high-performance geothermal energy solutions that can support net zero targets and local energy security.

Research themes include geothermal energy, heat transfer, hydrothermal analysis, numerical modelling, thermal energy storage, and subsurface flow/transport processes. The project will use tools such as FEFLOW (or COMSOL/alternatives), plus MATLAB or Python for model development and sensitivity analysis. Experimental data from the Glasgow Geoenergy Observatory will support calibration and validation of the models.

The studentship is fully funded for 3.5 years. Eligible candidates who can pay tuition at the Home rate may apply. Funding includes an annual tax-free stipend of £21,805 for 2026/27 at the UKRI rate, with tuition fees covered.

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline.

To apply, email the main supervisor Dr Christopher Brown with your current level of study, academic background, relevant experience, and a paragraph explaining your motivation for the project. The advert also provides a direct application link.

Deadline: 28 December 2026.
