About this position
PhD Position in Electrical Engineering: Multi-Modal Environment Modeling for Wireless Spatial Intelligence
Uppsala University is recruiting one full-time doctoral student to the Division of Signals and Systems within the Department of Electrical Engineering in Uppsala, Sweden. The project, Multi-Modal Environment Modeling for Wireless Spatial Intelligence, explores how future wireless networks can perceive, understand, and interact with physical environments.
The doctoral research will develop theories, algorithms, and AI models for wireless localization, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), multimodal environment modeling, and wireless spatial intelligence. Research topics include combining wireless measurements with vision, geometry, maps, and other sensing modalities; learning radio and electromagnetic primitives; collaborative perception and semantic information sharing; multimodal-aided localization; 3D reconstruction; differentiable rendering; wireless world models; uncertainty quantification; robustness; and generalization across scenarios and frequency bands. Methods will be evaluated through mathematical analysis, simulation, and experimental validation.
Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field and have strong knowledge in at least two areas such as wireless communications, signal processing, statistical inference, optimization, machine learning, computer vision, or robotics. Experience with 5G/6G, ISAC, wireless sensing, SLAM, embodied AI, multimodal learning, generative AI, or world models is desirable. Excellent English and strong Python skills are required; PyTorch, TensorFlow, scientific computing, simulation, and experimental experience are advantageous.
The 48-month position starts on 1 March 2027, or by agreement. Doctoral students are full-time university employees with salary, pension contributions, social benefits, parental leave, paid vacation, and a departmental salary supplement. Teaching and other departmental work may account for up to 20% of working time. Research visits and internships through international collaborations may be available.
Applications must include a research-interest and experience statement of no more than two pages, CV, diploma and certificate copies, thesis or draft thesis, and other relevant documents. Applications should be submitted through Uppsala University's recruitment system by 30 November 2026. Questions may be directed to Hui Chen or Subhrakanti Dey.
